Apple TV: Still A Hobby

Steve Jobs has admitted that Apple has never taken Apple TV seriously. But he says the company has now listened to users (if there are any!) and the set-top box is being relaunched.

It's very small...about the size of a drinks coaster...costs £99...and connects to your TV by HDMI cable and to your computer via your WiFi router.

Apple has signed deals with Disney and Fox, so will be offering their movies and ABC and FoxTV shows for rent. Apple is desperately hoping other studios will sign up soon. The TV shows will cost 99p for 24-hours. Movies will be about £5 for a new-to-DVD release.

Disappointingly, the box isn't operated by iOS, so no apps to download and use on your TV.

Not much of a change there then.  OK, the box is smaller and now offers a few more shows and films but it's certainly not the TV-viewing-game-changer some have been predicting.

Steve Jobs said Apple TV was a bit of a hobby in the past.  Looks like it still is.

It's on the Apple webstore for shipping sometime in September.
