News Corp Set To Launch "Daily" iPad Newspaper

Rupert Murdoch
News Corp boss Rupert Murdoch has made no secret of his belief that tablet computers, and the iPad in particular, are the way forward for newspapers. Printed papers are dying and while it seems people are not prepared to pay for access to a newspaper website, they are prepared to pay to read news on an iPad.

The Guardian is reporting that talks between News Corp and Apple are at an advanced stage and will result in an iPad-only digital paper called "Daily" being launched early next year.

It's thought the subscription price will be 62p/99c a week, which is much cheaper than current subscriptions charged by print papers for their digital output.

"Daily" will not have a print edition. In fact, it won't even have a web edition. It will be purely for the iPad initially and, it's thought, other tablets later.

The Guardian says 100 staff are already being hired for "Daily", which will be based at the News Corp headquarters in New York. It's thought the digi-paper will concentrate on news for a fairly young audience in the United States at first, but it would be comparatively easy to regionalise editions in the future.

It's believed Rupert Murdoch and Apple's Steve Jobs will make a joint announcement confirming the project later this month.
