News Corp's "The Daily" iPad-Only Newspaper Set For Big Launch

I've already reported that it looks like Apple and News Corp are getting together to launch a new digital newspaper solely for the iPad.

Well, things are hardening up.

Apple is thought to be organising a "big media event" for December 9.  It would take an idiot...or a blogger...not to realise this will be to formally announce The Daily.  And it will be a star-studded affair...on stage with Steve Jobs will be News Corp boss Rupert Murdoch.

Yes, Stevo and Roop will tell the world that this is the way forward and they are the saviours of the newspaper industry.

Which, I may add, they might well be.

The Daily will be, err, produced daily from News Corp offices in New York - probably starting early next year - with a weekly subscription of 62p/99c.  Now that's cheap compared to iPad newspaper subscription offerings we have at the moment. Except, of course, the ones that are free.

It will also mark a new of Apple handling subscriptions for apps. You will be able to sign up, and the money will be sucked out of your account automatically. In fact, there are reports that Apple will have to update the iOS software for this to work...so we could be seeing iOS4.3 sometime in December.

It's fascinating to watch the newspaper industry flay around in this new digital age. Printed newspaper circulation is dropping fast, but the good old Fourth Estate still hasn't sussed out how much we, as consumers, are prepared to pay for digital news offerings.

My betting is The Daily will sell like hotcakes, if it has country-specific editions and keep to a 99c-a-week price.
