Apple Joins Pledge For Universal Micro-USB Charger

Fourteen phone manufacturers have agreed to a new European rule that all phones should have the same charging method - micro-USB.

The companies include Apple, Nokia, Samsung and RIM's Blackberry.

It means they've agreed to get rid of proprietary chargers and one charger lead should fit all.

But...and it's a big but...there's no time-scale, although the European Commission says it hopes to see the uni-charger introduced in early 2011.

It could mean phone manufacturers abandoning including chargers with mobile phones and expecting everyone to have a uni-charger.
