iPhone notifications just don't work very well. But now you cam improve them beyond recognition on jailbroken devices.
There's an app in the Cydia store called MobileNotifier and the video above shows you what it's capable of.

Update: A word of warning if you use Intelliscreen...MobileNotifier alerts freeze on the lockscreen if you have Intelliscreen enabled. This is a beta, so hopefully it will be fixed.
