Pressure Mounts On Apple Over 30% Subscription Charge

Pressure is mounting on Apple to back down from its plans to charge publishers a 30% levy for in-app subscriptions.

Apple wants the subscriptions for newspapers and magazines to be handled through customers' iTunes accounts.

It's now reported that anti-trust regulators in the US and Europe are poised to investigate the new pricing plans.

At the moment publishers can provide a link in an app to take users to a website where they can subscribe, with Apple getting no payment. The planned new system means publishers will be forced to offer subscriptions within the app using iTunes payment methods with Apple getting a third.

Apple says the system will make it easier for customers and publishers will see subscriptions increase.

The bosses of about 60 European publishers met this week and afterwards the International Newspaper Marketing Association issued a statement:
"Publishers simply can't afford to invest in new technology, products and services when the platform charges them 30% of total revenue."
It's also angered developers of streaming music apps, like Spotify, whose app opens a browser window for customers to subscribe.
