Sony Takes On Apple In Tablet Market

Sony has confirmed it's entering the tablet market with two new devices.

Both will run Google's tablet-specific Android Honeycomb operating system and Sony says it intends to become a leading player in the booming market which is still dominated by Apple's iPad.

The Sony line-up includes the S1, a 9.4" tablet, and the S2, a dual 5.5" screen clamshell device.

Both will feature 3G and WiFi connections and the company has indicated it's aiming for releases before the end of the year, possibly in the autumn.

The success of the iPad has created a whole new market for touchscreen tablet devices with analysts estimating sales will quadruple to nearly 300-million over the next four years.

Other big players, including Samsung, Motorola and Blackberry, are trying to dent Apple's dominance, but so far without much success.  Demand for the newly-released iPad 2 has overwhelmed Apple with stocks still low and waiting lists common.
