Google has confirmed that its "Google Wallet" instant-payment-with-your-phone will launch this summer.
Initially, it will operate in New York and San Francisco followed by a nationwide US roll-out. The launch in other countries isn't known.
"Google Wallet" will work from an app on Android smartphones. Users will be able to swipe their phone over a terminal at participating outlets to make instant payments. The system is piggy-backing on MasterCard's PayPass technology.
Security measures include having to tap in a personal code in the app before swiping.
