Mango Update Unveiled For Windows Smartphones

Microsoft has unveiled Mango, the next major update for its Windows Phone 7 smartphone operating system.

It's confirmed the update will be free, will be available to all existing devices running WP7 and will be released around about the beginning of autumn.

Microsoft says there will be 500 new features, including the Internet Explorer 9 updated web browser.

Among other improvements will be better messaging integration with Facebook, Twitter, MSN and no doubt lots of other social chatter sites.  Bing search also gets a makeover.

The Mango update will be pre-installed in a raft of new Nokia phones being planned following the manufacturers official tie-up with Microsoft.

But there's a lot of catching up to do. WP7 currently holds just 4% of the smartphone market which is dominated by Google's Android, Apple's iOS and Blackberry.
