Nokia Closes UK And US On-Line Stores

Here's another sign-of-the-times for embattled Nokia. The once-mighty-but-now-ailing company has closed the doors on its on-line shops in the UK and US.

Its phones will now only be on sale at third-party retailers.

Nokia on-line stores in France. Spain and Germany close down last month and others worldwide will follow as part of the company's "restructuring" - or fight for survival, as it's known.

Nokia is banking on its new deal with Microsoft to produce a range of smartphones running Windows Phone 7 operating system in favour of the ousted and clunky Symbian. But while Nokia's bureaucratic wheels slowly turn, Apple and Google are strengthening a stranglehold on the smartphone market.

Too little, much too late.
