BBC iPlayer iPad App Starts Global Launch With Roll-Out In 11 Countries

The BBC's iPlayer today starts an international roll-out with the launch of an iPad app in 11 Western European Countries. The US, Canada and Australia will follow later this year.

The global iPlayer app has some free, ad-supported content, but the majority is on subscription - €6.99 a month or €49.99 a year. And, unlike the already-released UK version, it won't just be catch-up TV, it will also include BBC archive programming.

Today's launch countries are France, Germany, Belgium, Austria, Italy, Luxembourg, Ireland, Holland, Spain, Portugal and Switzerland.

The global version will allow streaming over 3G as well as WiFi, unlike the UK version which is WiFi-only. You'll also be able to download shows to store on your iPad and watch later. Now that would be good to see in the UK too.
"There is at least 1,500 hours of content there from day one, and it will be growing by at least 100 hours a month going forward," said Mark Smith, launch director, global iPlayer at BBC Worldwide.
"Most audiences know the big shows like Top Gear or Doctor Who, but maybe not so much about other shows, so we have been working hard on how we surface that content."
Love that phrase..."surface the content". It's understood the BBC has plans to roll-out the global service on other platforms, including Android.
