eBook Sales Save The Day For Barnes & Noble

Increased sales of the Nook and eBooks have saved the day for Barnes & Noble.

The bookseller has announced first-quarter sales figures of $1.4-billion, an increase of 2% on the same period last year.

It comes as traditional printed book sales are dropping. Barnes & Noble store sales were down 3% to $1-billion.

But the company's eBook division grew 140% to $277-million. That includes book downloads as well as the company's hardware - the Nook and the Nook Color eReaders.

Barnes & Noble will be well pleased with this.  It's facing strong competition from the big players in the eBook - Amazon with its Kindle and Apple with its iPad.

It says it's hoping to double sales this year in its eBook division.
