HP Ditches Computers And Smartphones

HP is to stop making computers and smartphones. It's a U-turn for the company which earlier this year said it would concentrate on the production of tablets and smartphones running the webOS operating system.

webOS was invented by Palm, which HP bought for $1.2-billion last year.

HP's first foray into the tablet market was a spectacular failure in the face of the dominance of Apple's iPad. The TouchPad was launched to lukewarm reviews and has failed to sell.

It also produced a series of smartphones running webOS - including the Pre and the Veer - but they too failed to sell.

HP says it will now concentrate on software production and as part of that move has announced it's buying UK software company Autonomy for $7.1-billion.
