DigiTimes is reporting that Apple has ordered components for the next-generation iPad with prototype assembly starting in October.
Sources "close to the subject" say Cupertino is hoping to get the iPad 3 on sale early next year to keep it ahead of the flood of tablets entering the market - albeit unsuccessfully at the moment.
It's thought the iPad 3 will have a high-resolution Retina display, like the iPhone 4, and faster processor.
It comes as speculation mounts the iPhone 5 will be launched next month (possibly October).
