Amazon To Launch Kindle Fire Tablet Wednesday

We know Amazon is holding a news conference in New York on Wednesday, September 28, and we know it's to launch a new Kindle. Now we know a bit more.

It will be a touchscreen, 7-inch, colour device running on the Android OS.  Amazon wants you not only to read books on it, but surf the web, use loads of apps and, well, buy it instead of an iPad.

It will be called the Kindle Fire (geddit?) and will go on sale in the US later this year, but in time for the Christmas market. Customers in the UK may have to wait until early next year.

It will be priced at less than the iPad and about double the cost of the current Kindle.

Think RIM Blackberry Playbook, because apparently that's what it will look like. The Fire is being made by the same manufacturer...and word has it, it's very much the same design.
