Apple Invests In Better Maps, Buys 3D Mapping Marvel

Apple is investing heavily in 3D mapping technology. So it seems the days of the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch having to rely on Google Maps may be numbered.

9to5Mac reports that Apple has now bought a company called C3 Technologies, which is very highly regarded in the industry and which produced the image above of Las Vegas Strip. As a still, the photo above doesn't look much but wait until you see it move!

Apple has been making steady mapping acquisitions over the years, but this is probably the most significant. C3 began as a division of the Saab defence industry giant.

Here's a video which give you an idea of what the technology can do and how it could blow Google Street View out of the water.
