If you've updated to iOS5 and you're chomping at the bit for an untethered jailbreak, we've got semi-good news. Developer, BigBoss, has come up with a semi-tethered jailbreak.
Let's explain. At the moment, there's only a tethered jailbreak for iOS5 - eg Redsn0w - which means you must plug your device into your PC every time you want to reboot.
Now, "SemiTether" will let you reboot without connection to a PC. But it will only be a partial-reboot which means only the major core apps will work on your device:
So it should see you through until you can plug in your device to a PC and do a full forced reboot using Redsn0w.
- You can reboot your device!
- You can make calls, send/receive messages, etc.
- MobileSafari won’t open (third-party web browser work fine)
- Mail won’t work properly.
- Jailbreak tweaks won’t work [at all] until tether-booted.
- Notification Center tweaks will cause a respring loop until tether-booted.
"SemiTether" tweak is available in the Cydia app store on jailbroken devices. You'll have to add the repo www.thebigboss.org/semitether
Be warned that some people are reporting problems with this tweak: it's sending their devices into permanent Apple-logo boot screen (although this can be cured by plugging in and force re-booting).
For those of us still waiting, it looks like an untethered iOS5 jailbreak should be released fairly soon.
