Taiwan Government Investigates Apple's "Slide-To-Unlock" Patent

A couple of days ago, we told you how Apple has been awarded a patent on the slide-to-unlock technology used on the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.  And we predicted that it would get the industry into a tizz.

Well, the first sign of tizzing has come from the Taiwan Government. Prime Minister Wu Den-yih has ordered officials to investigate how the patent may hit other manufacturers.

And hit them it probably will. Much the same technology is used by Android and Windows Phone OS devices and Taiwan is the home to one of the largest manufacturers of these devices, HTC.
Attending a weekly Cabinet meeting, Wu said that he was concerned about Apple’s new patent, particularly how it would affect Taiwanese companies operating in the smartphone and tablet markets. As a result, both the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) and the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) have been instructed to help domestic companies (which includes HTC) to deal with possible patent infringement complaints filed by the Cupertino-based company.
It looks like Apple may have a bit of a fight on its hands.
