"More Must Be Done" To Stop Huge Smartphone Data Bills

UK mobile phone operators must do more to stop people getting huge bills for overshooting their data limit, says the Communications Ombudsman.

Lewis Shand Smith says the problem is getting worse as more people use smartphones to download things like videos and music.
Many customers believe they have an "unlimited data" contract. But if they look in the small print, they'll find there's a "fair usage" cap...and if they go over that, they pay through the nose.

The Ombudsman wants companies to do there things:

  • Be absolutely clear what they mean by "unlimited data" and don't describe it as such if it's not.
  • Warn customers when they're nearing their data limit.
  • Give more advice on the amount of data being used.
