Five Reasons To Jailbreak Your iPhone

There's now an untethered jailbreak for the iPhone 4S. But why should you jailbreak?

Well...if you do, you get that icon above added to your homescreen. Tap it and it takes you to the Cydia app store, which has hundreds of apps that Apple won't allow in its official App Store.

Some of the apps cost money, but many are free. Here are five we think makes jailbreaking worth it.

IntelliscreenX

IntelliscreenX makes your lockscreen into a mine of information. It shows you at a glance the weather, the time, your calendar appointments, your emails, your text messages, your Facebook and Twitter feeds and your choice of RSS feeds.

IntelliscreenX costs $9.99 and has a free trial period.

biteSMS

biteSMS deals with text messages the way they should be dealt with. It's a souped-up replacement for Apple's built-in SMS app. Composing a text message is a doddle, even from the lockscreen.  It gives you pop-ups when you receive a message and allows you to reply from the pop-up. You can add smilies or even schedule a delay on the message being sent. biteSMS is free if you don't mind the odd ad appearing, or £5.95 for an ad-free version.

Five Icon Dock

This is a good example of a simple app - or tweak - that makes a big difference. It lets you drag another app icon into your homescreen dock. Simple, very useful and free.

Winterboard

Apple doesn't allow you to theme your phone, but you can if you jailbreak. There are hundreds of themes in the Cydia store, some free some not. To make a theme work on your iPhone, you need an app called Winterboard. It replaces your Springboard. Clever, eh?
Winterboard is free.

Activtor

This makes using your iPhone so much easier. You can launch your messaging app by pressing the volume button, or holding down the top notification bar. In fact, Activator allows you to set shortcuts for most of your iPhone functions and apps. Activator is free.

These are just five of the hundreds of apps and tweaks you'll find in Cydia. We hope it gives your a taste. Now it's up to you to take the plunge.
