Apple Confirms iPad 3 Launch On March 7

Apple has confirmed it's holding a media event in San Francisco on March 7. And while it hasn't actually said it's to launch the next-generation iPad...well...it is.

That's the Press invitation above.

The event starts at 10 am PST. That's 6pm UK time.

It's widely expected the new iPad will be slightly thicker than the iPad 2 (and slightly thinner than the original iPad) and will have a high-definition Retina display, faster processor and probably higher-spec cameras.

The screen size will be the same as the first two models and it's certain it will have the Siri voice assistant software seen on the iPhone 4S. In fact, the March 7 announcement could include improvements to Siri, which is technically still in beta on the iPhone.

It's likely the iPad 3 (or will it be called the iPad 2S?) will go on sale within a few days in the US and then roll-out to other countries, including the UK, probably a week or so later.

There have been reports Apple may release a smaller-screen iPad at the same time, but this seems increasingly unlikely.

And in the "fairly likely" category, there's the announcement of a new upgraded Apple TV box with a faster processor and better graphics.

But...as with all Apple events...we won't know for sure until it's announced.

One nice touch was the timing of the Apple invitation. It was sent out as Google boss, Eric Schmidt, was starting his keynote speech at the Mobile World Congress trade event in Barcelona.

It left many tech journos bashing out stories about Apple as they were listening to Schmidt.
