Windows Phone OS Faces Another Setback...Insiders Say "No Update To Apollo For Current Owners"

There's increasing speculation that there'll be no update to the next version of Microsoft's Windows Phone OS for owners of current smartphones, including the flagship Nokia Lumia range.

The current version is Mango, with Apollo is due to be released later this year. It will take the operating system from WP7 to WP8 and will go hand-in-hand with Microsoft's release of Windows 8 for desktops, laptops and tablets.

The Verge is quoting a "trusted source" saying current WP7 smartphones won't be getting the update, which will leave many owners angry.

IJSMblog understands that Nokia, which is banking its future on the Lumia range, WILL offer an update, but not the full thing. It may be more of a cosmetic change than anything else, a move that could well leave owners feeling short-changed.

It comes after major mobile networks in Europe said the Lumia smartphones are just not good enough to compete with Apple's iPhone and Android devices. And Microsoft's General Manager of Windows Phone Product Marketing, Gavin Kim, quit his job five months after being recruited by Microsoft from Samsung.
