Microsoft has summoned journos to a surprise news conference today in Los Angeles. It's even more shrouded in secrecy than an Apple "media event".
Tech journos seem genuinely clueless about what's going to be announced, but top of the list of speculation is a Microsoft-branded tablet running Windows to take on Apple's iPad head-to-head.
The tablet-friendly Windows 8 operating system is expected to be released later this year, which could coincide with a hardware release.
Or...Microsoft may be teaming up with Barnes and Noble to produce a tablet specialising in eBook reading....
(UPDATE: The Verge website is now quoting a B&N spokesperson saying it is not connected to today's Microsoft announcement).
Or...Nokia is throwing in the towel and selling its smartphone business to Microsoft (unlikely, but a definite possibility for the future)...
All will be revealed over the next 24-hours...
