The social networking system was unavailable for more than an hour with the confusing message above posted on its homepage.
And if Twitter goes down, it affects a lot of people: it has more than 500m active users globally sending more than 340m tweets a day.
Its last major outage was on June 21, 2012, and lasted two hours.
