Amazon Claims 22% Of US Tablet Market For Kindle Fire

Amazon says its Kindle Fire has claimed 22% of the tablet market in the US since its launch nine months ago.

The Android-powered device - smaller and cheaper than the iPad - is still only available for sale in the US, but it's thought that could change next month. Amazon is holding a news conference where it's believed it will announce the Fire 2 and availability in Europe.

To add to the speculation, Amazon says the Fire is officially sold out in the US.

Amazon never releases sales figures, so we don't know how many device it claims have been sold, but if the 22% marketshare is true, it puts it in third place in the US behind the iPad with 55% and the myriad of Android tablets at an estimated 35%.

The Kindle has some fighting to do...Google has just released the much-acclaimed 7-inch Nexus tablet and Apple is expected to announce an iPad Mini later this year.
