Heads roll at Apple after Maps fiasco and retail "mess-up"

The former boss of the UK electrical retail group Dixons, who was poached by Apple just five months ago, is leaving the company.

John Browett was appointed head of Apple's expanding chain of retail stores but soon after the appointment the company was forced to admit it "messed up" amid reports of planned staff cuts.

We were surprised at the Browett appointment to head up Apple's customer-focussed, bright and shiny shops after heading Dixons, considered much more downmarket.

Browett signed a "golden hello" deal with Apple worth £36m in shares over five years. It's not known how much he may collect after just five months.

The Retail Division will now report directly to CEO Tim Cook until a replacement is recruited.

Browett's move is part of a major management shake-up at Apple, which also sees the departure of senior vice-president for iOS Scott Forstall.

iOS has been heavily criticised recently for its built-in Apple Maps app, which the company was forced to admit made glaring errors. CEO Tim Cook had to release an embarrassing statement advising users to download alternative apps, including Microsoft's Bing.

Forstall was also responsible for the bloody awful Siri iOS voice "assistant".

Reports say Forstall's fate was sealed when he refused to sign a public apology for Apple Maps.

Amongst all this, there's promotion for Sir Jony Ive. The head of hardware design behind most of Apple's products over the past 10 years is put in charge of "human interface". In human-speak that means he's now boss of software as well as hardware.
