Windows Phone 8: the hardware

There are two manufacturers that could snatch good early sales of Windows Phone 8 devices. HTC and Nokia both have nice-looking offerings.

Nokia's high-end flagship device is the Lumia 920 with its 4G, 8MP Carl Zeiss camera, 32GB storage and what the company describes as the best touchscreen ever.

The Finnish company's mid-market model is the Lumia 820, with 5MP camera, smaller screen, 8GB storage but with a slot for up to 32GB microSD.

Both Nokias are capable of wireless charging, but you'll have to pay extra.

HTC is - like Nokia - struggling for survival and its WP8 offerings might be a lifesaver. Again there are two, but both are less expensive than the rival Lumias, which could give the Taiwan company the edge.

Flagship is the HTC 8X with 16GB storage and 8MP camera. Mid-tier is the 8S with 4GB storage but space for up to 32GB microSD.

There are also WP8 phones from Motorola, Huawei and some other manufacturers. But the real battle is between Nokia and HTC. With both manufacturers fighting for survival, watch out for some competitive deals.
