Ever-expanding "Other" WP8 storage problem gets escalated

We've banged on about this many times and it now looks like something may be done about it.

It's The Mystery Of The Ever-Expanding 'Other' storage folder on Windows Phone 8 devices.

If you go to Settings > Phone Storage then hit the Phone bar, you'll see the screen above.

The problem centres on the 'Other' folder. No-one seems to know what it contains, but it just gets bigger and bigger and bigger - and we're talking GBs here - until you run out of space.

It appears it stores stuff like emails, calendar entries, Tile layout...but that's doesn't explain why it's so big.

It also appears it stores installation files of downloaded apps. But it seems those installation files don't get deleted if you delete the app.

Some users say it self-cleans when storage is about to run out...but many others say they just get a pop-up warning that they can't do whatever they're trying to do because there's no more available storage.

For WP8 phones with large internal storage, it's not a pressing problem. But if you own, say, an HTC 8S, which only has 4GB internal storage - two of which are taken up by the operating system - it's a real issue. They run out of storage very quickly.

Anyway, over on the Microsoft community forums a moderator has eventually intervened in a thread about the issue...and says it's been escalated:

Let's hope Microsoft at last says something about this issue. It needs a solution and the first step would be for Microsoft to acknowledge it.
