Major update for Nokia City Lens augmented-reality app

Nokia has released an update for its augmented-reality Windows Phone app, Nokia City Lens.

The app uses your phone camera and labels various places of interest in view like restaurants  public buildings, railway and tube stations and shops. The app is dynamic and will label places within a camera's line of sight as you move it.

The update brings these new features:
  • Sightline feature lets you switch your view to only what’s in your direct line of sight.
  • Quick information. Now you can quickly view a place’s address without leaving your camera view.
  • Freeze view lets you pause your view and study your options without having to keep your phone pointed at the target.
  • Pin your most common searches and favourite categories to home screen so you can find what you are looking for at a glance
Quick Information is really useful: just hit the place's label and a banner drops down giving you its address. Previous versions have taken you straight to Maps, which you still have the option to do by tapping the label again.

So is Freeze View: previously, it was difficult to keep your phone camera pointing in a certain direction while you tried to read the labels. Now you can hit the Freeze button on the screen and the view remains static letting you drop down your phone to study it more easily.

Nokia City Lens is a free app on Nokia's Lumia series of Windows phones. It's been updated for both WP7 and WP8.

Update...Here's a really cheesy video from Nokia explaining the features of City Lens:
