Portico WP8 update now going live worldwide

It seems that Microsoft and mobile operators around the world are now getting serious about rolling out the Portico update for the Windows Phone 8 operating system.

There are reports worldwide that users are now getting the update. It seems, initially anyway, that Nokia devices are being targeted first - both factory-unlocked and network-locked phones. The whole process will be staggered, so it won't hit everyone at the same time.

The update is aimed at fixing a bug that caused some WP8 devices to randomly reboot or switch off.

It also lets you reply to an unanswered call with a text message (you know..."I'm in a meeting and will call back"), it lets you save drafts of text messages, it gives you the option of keeping your WiFi connection live when the phone sleeps (saves on mobile data costs for push messages and apps that regularly update into) and there are some extra settings in Internet Explorer.

But one apparent bug, or at least failing, in WP8 it doesn't address is the mystery of the ever-expanding "other" storage folder, which we will keep banging on about until Microsoft at least acknowledges the problem.

It's expected the Portico update could take weeks to roll out to everyone.

Your device should notify you if the update is available, but you can check yourself by hitting Settings > Phone Update > check for updates.
