Windows Phone gains ground in Europe smartphone market

I hope you're looking at this on a big screen. Or have a magnifying glass. Or 20/20 vision at least.

These figures come from Kantar WorldPanel and show the company's estimate of smartphone marketshare country-by-country for the 12 weeks ending 23 December 2012.

And, in Europe at least, it's good news for Windows Phone.

In Great Britain, WP share has gone up to 5.9% from 2.2% for the same period a year earlier.

It's a market still dominated by Android and iOS, but it shows that WP is gaining fast on Blackberry in GB.

In Europe, the biggest rise for Microsoft is in Italy - up from 2.8% to 13.9%.

But not such good news from one of the world's biggest smartphone markets, the US, where the WP rise is only from 2.2% to 2.6%. It seems for the time being, Apple has the US sewn up.

OK, we're sure they won't be popping the champagne corks quite yet in Redmond, but it does indicate that the new Windows Phone 8 devices are starting to gain ground. And the trend is upwards. Slowly. But upwards.
