BlackBerry announces increased profits with 1m Z10s shipped

BlackBerry has announced increased net profits of £82.9m for the three months until March 31.

That's up from nearly £6m profit the previous quarter and a loss of £82.5m for the same quarter a year ago.

The turnaround has come with a major restructuring of the company and heavy job losses.

BlackBerry and Windows Phone are fighting for third place in the smartphone market, still dominated by Android and Apple.

Canada-based BlackBerry says it shipped a million of its new Z10 phones running the updated BB10 operating system. It should be remembered that shipping is not the same as sales and no figures have been released for how many handsets have been sold.

Blackberry is planning to launch another new smartphone, with a physical keyboard, to sell alongside the touchscreen Z10.
