Nokia calls London Lumia event for May 14

Nokia has called a news conference in London on Tuesday, May 14, to announce "what's next" in its line of Lumia Windows Phone 8 smartphones.

At the moment, top bets are on a new flagship device possibly sporting the long-awaited 41-megapixel PureView camera already included in the Symbian-powered Nokia 808.

The last additions to the Lumia line were the mid-range 720 and the low-end 520 announced in February, which makes a new top-end device more likely.

The company's current Lumia flagship is the 920, which appears to have fairly unspectacular sales figures especially in North America.

While low-end Lumias seem to have comparatively healthy sales figures worldwide, Nokia has still failed to provide a real Windows Phone alternative to the top-of-the-range market leaders - Samsung's Galaxy S3/4 and Apple's iPhone.

A high-end Lumia that brought in successful sales could also provide a death blow to BlackBerry, currently trying to push its Z10 device.

And that would leave Windows Phone - and Nokia - in a good position to solidify its claim to third position in worldwide smartphone sales behind Android and Apple.
