Nokia updates Lumia Storage Check - maps can now go on microSD card

Credit to Nokia: while Microsoft appears to be doing nothing fast to fix the storage problem in Windows Phone 8, Nokia is trying hard.

It's been rolling out Lumia Storage Check app with the latest Nokia firmware update. And now the app itself has been updated.

It will now let you choose where to store Maps, which take up a lot of space, either on the phone's internal storage or a microSD card if your device takes one.

The Storage Check update also lets users delete some temporary files. And Nokia is now making it available in the Windows Phone Store as a free download for Lumia users.

Use your phone to scan the QR code below to take you to the app in the app store.

At the time of writing, the Store description for the app is still Version One, but the downloaded app is the update.

The app, which is still in beta, is available for all WP8 Lumia devices, but not WP8 phones from other manufacturers.

Minimum firmware required

Check your firmware version from 'settings - about phone - more information', under the 'Firmware revision number' and see below if the preconditions for this app are met:
  • Lumia 820 or Lumia 920: 1232.5957.1308.0000 and higher
  • Lumia 920T: 2041.0009.1308.1002 and higher
  • Lumia 520, Lumia 620 or Lumia 720: 1030.6407.1308.0000 and higher

Nokia also hopes this update will fix an issue with the first version of the app that stopped it working on some devices.

Microsoft has promised a WP8 update to sort out the problem of users running out of internal storage space when their "Other" folder keep filling up with temporary files. But we're still waiting. In the meantime, at least you can grab back some space by using Lumia Storage Check.
