Lumia 928: Nokia tries again to break into the US top-end smartphone market

Nokia is trying again to break into the high-end smartphone market in the US with the official unveiling of the Lumia 928.

It's hoping the Windows Phone 8 device will take on Apple's iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy S4, which dominate the US market.

Nokia's previous top-of-the-range Lumia - the 920 - failed in North America, even though it's been modestly successful elsewhere, and despite hugely expensive marketing campaigns by Microsoft as well as Nokia itself.

The 920 was applauded for its technology, but was criticised for its size and weight.

The 928 has been slimmed down and weighs in at 162g compared with the 185g of the 920.

Nokia has done a deal with Verizon which will sell the 928 as an exclusive at $99 on a two-year contract. It's also expected to be available for $500 off-contract. It's not yet known if the new phone will be released on other networks in other countries.

It seems Nokia is making some headway with its lower-end Lumias - especially the Lumia 620, which has received universal praise and sells for less than $200 in the US.

But it's high-end devices that bring in the money with more profit per unit. And that's where Nokia needs to score to make its decision to use Windows Phone OS pay off.
