Ubuntu seeks $32m crowdfunding for new smartphone and gets nearly $2m in first day

It's the biggest crowdfunding project ever. The company behind the Ubuntu computer operating system is trying to raise $32m in 30 days to manufacture and market a new smartphone, the Ubuntu Edge.

UK-based Canonical is using the Indiegogo website for investors to sign up and $1.7m was raised within hours.

The project has given itself 30 days to get the cash to produce 40,000 devices, which would dual-boot with the Ubuntu and Android operating systems.

And what do investors get? The first day saw the offer of the smartphone with free delivery in the UK and US for $600. After the first 24-hours, the cost goes up to $830.

For $10,000, you'll get one of the first fifty numbered Edges to come off the production line.

Delivery is estimated at April/May 2014.

"We’ve scoured the research labs of the biggest companies and most exciting startups for the latest and greatest mobile technologies to specify the first-generation Edge.
Crafted from cool, textured amorphous metal, the Edge has a distinctive, precise look but its rakishly chamfered edges are shaped to fit naturally in the palm -- our design prototype already has a wonderfully solid feel. It’s the right size, too. Edge gestures are the next big thing in mobile, and our testing has found that a 4.5in screen is ideal for comfortable control of all four edges with one hand."
