Microsoft GDR2 bug appears to hide Google Calendar entries from third-party WP8 calendar apps

Windows Phone 8 users are reporting problems with Calendar sync after the long-awaited GDR2 WP8 operating system update.

It seems Google Calendar entries are failing to show up in third-party calendar apps because they're being wrongly marked "private". All that's showing is appointment times.

The GDR2 update - which Nokia is bundling with its Amber update for Lumia phones - includes a change of method for Google sync. Instead of using its own ActiveSync method for syncing contacts and calendars, Microsoft has been forced to use the CalDAV and CardDAV systems preferred by Google.

In fact, Google threatened to stop new Windows Phone users from syncing with its calendar and contacts, but was persuaded by Microsoft to extend the deadline until after GDR2 is released.

While synced Google calendar appointments still show up in the in-built Calendar app in WP8 even though they're now marked "private", they fail to be displayed in third-party WP8 apps, which are blocked by Microsoft from reading "private" entries.

It appears to be affecting only existing entries in Google Calendar, with new entries unaffected. We say only...but it means going through all existing entries and unmarking them "private".

I'm using the excellent Chronos Calendar for Windows Phone and all my existing Google Calendar appointments, which were public, synced as "private" and failed to show up in the app.

A thread on the apparent bug has been started in the Windows Phone official Dev Centre forums, with developers demanding Microsoft investigates and fixes the bug.
