3 scraps unlimited tethering but adds free 0800

UK mobile network 3 is scrapping unlimited tethering on all new all-you-can eat data phone contracts.

The free tethering was seen as a major attraction of the carrier. It meant users on unlimited data phone contracts could turn their devices into WiFi hotspots to connect laptops and tablets as much as they wanted.

Now, new customers will be limited to 2GB tethering and will have to pay extra for more.

It affects new customers from today...existing users will continue with the old deal.

Perhaps as a sweetener, 3 has also announced it's getting rid of charges for 0800 numbers. But all networks will be forced to do this later this year under order from regulator Ofcom.

3 is still the only major UK network to offer all-you-can-eat data.
