"Fake Google apps" removed from Windows Phone Store

Five fake Google apps have been removed from the Windows Phone Store.

WinBeta is reporting that the apps - Hangouts, Google Voice, Google Maps, Google Search and Google+ - were on sale for $1.99 each. The developer was listed as Google, Inc.

Google officially lists itself as Google Inc. So it seems the faker got through Microsoft's approval system by simply adding a comma.

The apps have now been removed - presumably by Microsoft after Google was asked for a comment by WinBeta.

Microsoft recently streamlined its app-approval system to make it faster for developers to get their software into the store.

It looks like it might be just a little too streamlined.

There's only one official Google app in the WP Store and that's the Google search app.

Google is still refusing to make other apps for WP because of the intense rivalry with Microsoft.

There are many other apps with Google in their name in the store, but at least those don't try to pass themselves off as published by Google Inc.

Kudos to WinBeta.
