Microsoft releases Office for iPad on subscription, Word for iPhone goes free

We knew it was coming...and now it's here. Microsoft has confirmed Office for iPad.

The suite of apps - Word, Excel and PowerPoint - will be in the Apple App Store today and will be a free download.

There's no charge to view existing documents. But if you want to create or edit documents with the apps, you'll have to fork out for the Office 365 service starting at $6.99 a month.

Storage for the apps will be based on Microsoft's OneDrive cloud set up.

Interestingly, Microsoft has seen fit to release the suite of touch-friendly apps on iOS before releasing similar apps for its own Windows 8 touch platform for tablets.

Presumably, we'll see that released fairly swiftly.

Microsoft released a version of Office for iPhone last year. That has now gone free...until today it only worked with an Office 365 subscription. The iPhone app itself hasn't changed and isn't as all singing and dancing as its iPad sibling.
