@evleaks: Microsoft nearing licensing deal to keep Nokia brand - and scrap Surface for Lumia

@evleaks says...and what evleaks says usually turns out to be true...that Microsoft is nearing agreement to use the Nokia brand on its newly acquired smartphone range and to rebrand Surface tablets with Lumia:

There's a great deal of uncertainly over what Microsoft will actually brand its smartphone products since it bought Nokia's mobile phone division.

Surely the name Nokia is far to valuable to throw onto the scrapheap? Of course, but you can bet the what's left of the independent Nokia company will be getting the best licensing deal it can.

It's interesting as well that evleaks believes Microsoft wants to get rid of its Surface brand for tablets and call them Lumias to fall in line with its Windows Phone smartphones.

The latest Lumias are still being released under the Nokia brand. It had been thought Redmond might scrap the name and substitute "Microsoft Mobile", but it appears the iconic Finnish brand is far to valuable to throw away.
