Microsoft confirms another Android-powered Nokia phone

Microsoft has announced the release of a second Android-powered Nokia smartphone.

The operating system is developed by Google, arch-rival to Microsoft which bought out the mobile phones division of Nokia earlier this year. The first Nokia Android phone was released by the Finnish company before the buy-out.

Many had expected Redmond to ditch the Nokia X series, which runs a heavily-modified version of Android, but it has surprised observers with the announcement of the Nokia X2, a low-end device intended to emerging markets.

Microsoft is struggling to gain popularity for its own Windows Phone OS, which is used in the Nokia Lumia range of devices.

(BBC) "I still find it astounding that Microsoft is making Android phones, but there seems to be a steely determination to take a more open approach for the greater good of the whole company rather than just the Windows Phone platform," said Ben Wood, from the telecoms consultancy CCS Insight.
"If they don't do this, then someone else is going to get the business.
"I also think it's a reflection of the fact that Nokia's budget Asha line of feature phones was unable to compete with entry-level Android mobiles."
