Apple invents SIM you can use with multiple carriers

Apple today announced two new iPads...blah blah blah...

But quietly and behind the scenes it also announced something that is truly revolutionary.

The new iPad Mini 3 and the iPad Air 2 will ship with a multi-carrier SIM, if you've chosen to buy a device with GSM as well as WiFi.

It means you'll be able to go into the iPad settings and choose which mobile network you want to use on a monthly prepay plan.

So if you go abroad, just choose an available network for the country you're visiting without having the hassle of buying a new SIM and swapping it over.

Or in your home country, change networks depending on price.

Excellent.

But it's not quite as good as it looks.

Carriers have to sign up to be part of the SIM deal.

At the moment, it's only active in the UK and the US.

In the US, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile are participating...and in the UK it's only EE.

Let's hope networks everywhere sign up...and let's hope too that the multi-carrier SIM find its way to phones and tablets on all platforms - iOS, Android and Windows.
