Project Milkyway: Microsoft aims to get Windows 10 to phones 4-6 weeks after launch

It seems Microsoft is planning to speed up the process of getting Windows operating system updates out to phones.

It's calling it Project Milkyway and it aims to get the next major update - Windows 10 for Phone - out and loaded onto users devices 4-6 weeks after it's officially launched.

Great.

But will it happen?

Well....we don't advise holding your breath.

The last major update for Windows smartphones was WP 8.1 Denim.

It was "launched" three months ago and it still hasn't been pushed out to all devices - even flagship phones.

Microsoft does have a problem on its hands, as does Android.

Updates on both platforms have to be OKed not just by Microsoft, but also by mobile networks and by phone manufacturers.

And that can mean phone owners waiting months for an update after being teased about the new features at glitzy launch events.

It's a process Apple doesn't have to go through for iOS, because it manufactures all the devices itself and...well, as for the networks, they're firmly in Apple's pocket and it seems they will jump through hoops for Cupertino.

Good on Microsoft for acknowledging the problem.

But we have reservations that Project Milkyway will be trouble-free.
