Nokia "planning return to mobile phones next year"

It's reported that Nokia is planning a return to the mobile phone market next year.

The Finnish company sold its phone division to Microsoft last year and part of the deal was Redmond could use the Nokia brand for two years.

Now tech website re/code is quoting two sources saying Nokia is actively seeking ways to make handsets again.

Two weeks ago, it announced the acquisition of French telecom company Alcatel in a deal expected to be finalised....yup, you've guessed it...next year.

Four years ago, the then Nokia boss Stephen Elop likened the company to a man standing at the edge of a burning platform.

The once dominant maker of mobiles was losing badly in smartphones to the likes of Apple and Samsung.

That burning platform warning was preparing Nokia for the sale to Microsoft, where Elop now has a plum job.

It's thought Nokia may be looking for manufacturing partners to produce handsets. So we may not have to wait long for Nokia-branded smartphones to make a return, possibly running on Google's Android OS and not Windows Phone.
