Amazon Comes Out Fighting With New Kindle e-Reader

They've kept it pretty quiet but today Amazon has launched a new sleeker Kindle bookreader.  And it's also opening a UK ebookstore.

Amazon says the new Kindle is smaller, lighter, faster and with 50pc better contrast. In the past customers had to buy the device from The States and pay for books in dollars.

It was reported Amazon was poised to give up on the Kindle hardware in the face of soaring iPad sales and increasing downloads from Apple's iTunes bookstore.  But no.

The new device is available in WiFi-only (£109), as well as a WiFi and 3G model (£149).  The 3G incarnation uses the Vodafone network.

Amazon says it believes the prices and the launch of the UK bookstore will be a big boost for the Kindle.  It says it has the largest selection of books in the market at the lowest prices.

There's been speculation that a colour-screen version could be released later this year incorporating a full web browser but Amazon are staying shtum about that.

The Kindle sales site has gone live at Amazon with the devices available for pre-order with August 27 delivery.
