Google Rolling Out Chrome OS To iPad Rivals

Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt says tablet computer manufacturers are planning Chrome-driven devices to rival Apple's iPad.

He says Google is in talks with computer companies planning tablets and they'll run Google's Chrome operating system rather than its Android system.

At the moment Android is confined to smartphones, although Samsung is preparing to release its Galaxy Tab 7"-screen device and that will run the latest Android 2.2.

Addressing the IFA Consumer Electronics Show in Berlin, Schmidt said Google will announce partnerships later this year with computer manufacturers preparing tablets running Chrome to rival the iPad.

Schmidt also said the search giant is planning to launch its Google TV service in the US later this year and around the world next year. Its set-top box will bring web browsing to TV sets as well as rental content.

It comes a week after Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs announced the Apple TV box which will offer rental movies and TV shows.
