Ping "Drowning In Scams And Spams"

It had to happen.  While the take-up for Apple's new iTunes-based social networking service, Ping, has not been exactly overwhelming from legitimate users, it's become a happy hunting-ground for crooks.

Spam, spam and more spam.

At the moment, the most common spam scam is the offer of a free iPhone if you head over to a dodgy website that will ask you for all your iTunes details, like credit card numbers.

According to internet security firm, Sophos, the Ping network is "drowning in scams and spams". And it appears Ping offers no spam filtering mechanism.

Ping was launched two days ago by Apple as part of an iTunes update.  You can follow "friends" and learn what music they're downloading and playing.
