It seems Apple may be about to introduce new high-speed cable technology and we may see it first on a range of MacBook Pro laptops expected to be launched as early as this week.
It's been developed by Intel and is called Light Peak. When you connect a peripheral - like an external hard drive or a camera - to a PC using a Light Peak cable it can give data transfer speeds of up to 10 gigabits per second in both directions - substantially faster than even the new USB3 connections.
Light Peak was designed to use fibre-optic cables, but it's thought Apple may introduce the technology using copper-based cables. The speed would be the same but it would also let you charge external devices from your PC.
