Apple "Rakes In Lions's Share Of Cash Spent On Apps"

There may be more downloads of apps from Google's Android Marketplace, but it's Apple's App Store that rakes in the lion's share of the cash spent on apps by the buying public.

Analyst Gene Munster with Piper Jaffray says he believes Apple takes in 90% of money spent on apps.
"In other words, it appears that Apple has roughly 85-90% market share in dollars spent on mobile applications," he wrote in a note to investors. "While Google has closed the gap in terms of app dollars spent over the last year and we continue to believe Android will grow smartphone share faster than Apple, we believe Apple is likely to maintain 70%+ share of mobile app dollars spent over the next 3-4 years."
It seems Android users are mostly downloading free apps, while Apple users are more likely to pay, which explains why app developers say they're still concentrating on iOS.  While free apps can generate revenue with in-app ads, it's unlikely that comes close to matching cash up-front.
